Outdoor TV Installation in Birmingham, Alabama

Birmingham summers run hot, humid, and long. Pollen blankets the porch every March. Severe storms roll through every spring. Mosquitoes own the patio from May to October. And the Saturday afternoon college football game is one of the best reasons to be outside that exists in the South.

A regular indoor TV moved to a covered porch in Birmingham will be dead within 18 months. Sometimes faster. The capacitors fail in the humidity, the screen panel develops dark spots from heat cycling, the speakers corrode, and the warranty doesn't cover any of it. The right answer is an outdoor TV designed for the conditions — sealed against humidity, rated for the temperature swing, and built to actually last in this climate.

Iron City A/V is a home theater store and audio visual consultant in Birmingham. We do outdoor TV installation across Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills, Homewood, Hoover, Greystone, Liberty Park, Inverness, Cahaba Heights, and the Birmingham metro. This page covers what outdoor TV installation actually involves, why outdoor TVs cost more for a reason, what brands actually hold up in Alabama, and what to expect.

Why You Cannot Use an Indoor TV Outdoors in Birmingham

This is the conversation we have every week with customers who think they can save money by putting their old 65-inch indoor TV under their covered patio. The answer is no. Here's why:

Humidity. Birmingham humidity runs 75% to 95% from May through September. Indoor TVs aren't sealed against humidity — moisture works its way past the bezel, into the panel, and onto the circuit board. The TV starts behaving strangely after the first wet summer and dies in the second.

Heat. Even on a covered porch, Alabama summer afternoons hit 95°F to 100°F with the equipment running. Indoor TVs are rated to about 95°F maximum operating temperature. Run one above its rating for an entire summer and you're shortening its life by years per month.

UV exposure. Even covered patios get partial sun in the morning or afternoon. Indoor TV screens fade and yellow under UV exposure that outdoor TVs are coated to resist.

Pollen, dust, pests. Alabama spring pollen coats every horizontal surface for two months. Indoor TVs don't have sealed vents, so pollen gets pulled into the heat sinks every time the TV runs. Same goes for dust, spider webs, and the occasional wasp deciding the warm electronics are a nice place to nest.

Storms. Severe thunderstorm season runs March through July. Driving rain blows under most covered patios at some point during a real storm. Indoor TVs aren't water-resistant — even an inch of water exposure ends the warranty and usually the TV.

The bottom line: an outdoor TV costs 2 to 3 times more than an equivalent indoor TV, and that gap pays for itself the first time a thunderstorm rolls through.

Outdoor TV Categories — Full Sun, Partial Sun, Shaded

Outdoor TVs come in three brightness ratings, and the wrong rating for the location makes a $4,000 TV unwatchable.

Full Sun outdoor TVs. Built for direct sunlight on the screen — pool decks, uncovered patios, open-air entertainment areas. Rated to 1,500+ nits of brightness, anti-reflective screen coating, and aggressive cooling. The most expensive category. Right answer for most pool-deck installs in Greystone, Inverness, and Mountain Brook.

Partial Sun outdoor TVs. Built for areas that get direct sun part of the day but are shaded the rest. Pergolas, partial pavilions, west-facing covered patios that catch afternoon light. Rated around 700 to 1,000 nits — bright enough for ambient sun but not direct full-sun viewing.

Shaded outdoor TVs. Built for fully covered patios, screened porches, and outdoor kitchens that never see direct sun. Rated around 400 to 700 nits — about 2 to 3 times brighter than an indoor TV, weatherproofed, but not designed for direct sunlight on the screen. The most affordable outdoor category and the right call for most Birmingham covered porches.

The right category depends on which direction your patio faces, what time of day you'll watch, and whether the screen ever sees direct sun. We measure the actual sun exposure during the consultation, not just check a box.

What's Included in an Outdoor TV Installation

A complete outdoor TV install in Birmingham includes:

Outdoor-rated TV. Sized for the viewing distance, brightness-rated for the actual sun exposure, and selected for warranty terms that hold up in Alabama humidity. We'll cover the brands below.

Outdoor-rated mount. Stainless steel or powder-coated aluminum. Designed to hold up in salt air (relevant for clients who travel between Birmingham and the Gulf), humidity, and wind. Articulating arms when the seating angle calls for it. Tilt mounts for higher placements.

Site selection and mounting surface assessment. Brick, stone, stucco, wood, or vinyl siding — each requires different anchoring. Birmingham covered patios are often clad in cedar or stained pine, which look beautiful but require careful penetration to avoid splitting boards. Brick or stone outdoor walls (common on Mountain Brook and Vestavia patios) need masonry-rated anchors.

Weatherproof cabling. Outdoor-rated HDMI, outdoor-rated network cabling, conduit where exposed runs are unavoidable. Indoor cables fail outdoors within a year — the jackets crack, water gets in, signal goes intermittent. We use outdoor-rated cable for everything that touches outside air.

GFCI electrical and weatherproof outlets. Most outdoor TV installs need a new GFCI outlet placed behind the TV with a weatherproof in-use cover. We coordinate with a licensed electrician for any new circuit work — that's not a code-compliant DIY job.

Audio integration. Outdoor speakers — covered separately on our whole home audio category page — typically pair with the TV through a discrete outdoor amplifier or a Sonos Amp tucked inside the home. Outdoor TVs have built-in speakers, but they're not great. Real outdoor speakers turn a covered patio into an actual entertainment space.

Weatherproof control. Most outdoor TVs ship with weather-resistant remotes. For permanent installs, we set up a smart home control option — control the TV from a phone, an outdoor-mounted weatherproof keypad, or an existing Control4 or Apple Home setup.

Cover for the off-season. Outdoor TV covers extend lifespan by years, especially during pollen season and winter. We supply branded covers when the customer wants them.

Outdoor TV Brands That Hold Up in Birmingham

Four outdoor TV brands cover almost every Birmingham install:

Samsung Terrace. The outdoor model in Samsung's lineup. Three versions — Full Sun, Partial Sun, and standard. Available in 55", 65", 75", and 85" sizes. Best fit for clients already in the Samsung ecosystem (we sell Samsung indoors as well as outdoors), and the easiest brand to integrate with smart home platforms. Strong choice for partial-sun and shaded installs.

SunBriteTV. The longest-running dedicated outdoor TV brand and the workhorse of professional outdoor installation. Three model lines — Veranda Series for shaded covered porches, Pro 2 for partial sun, and Signature 2 for full sun. Sizes from 43" to 85". The most-installed outdoor TV in Birmingham overall.

Furrion Aurora. Three model tiers — Full Sun, Partial Sun, and Outdoor (shaded). Sizes from 43" to 85". Aggressive pricing, especially in the partial-sun tier. Solid alternative to SunBriteTV.

Séura. High-end specialty brand. Their Storm Ultra Bright series handles full sun installs at the reference tier. Sizes up to 75". Right call for clients who want the best-looking outdoor picture available and don't mind paying for it.

We sell Samsung, LG, and Sony for indoor installations. For outdoor, the indoor brands don't really compete — Samsung is the only one of the three that makes a serious outdoor TV (the Terrace), and for most outdoor installs we lean on SunBriteTV and Furrion alongside Samsung. Different category, different lineup.

Where Outdoor TVs Go in Birmingham Homes

Five locations account for almost every Birmingham outdoor TV install:

Covered patios and screened porches. The most common Birmingham outdoor TV install. Shaded category TV, mounted on a wall or under-eave, full cable concealment, paired with outdoor speakers. Common across Mountain Brook, Vestavia, Homewood, and Hoover.

Pool decks. Full sun category TVs, often poolside or under a pavilion that gets direct light at peak afternoon. Greystone, Liberty Park, and Inverness clients with serious pool deck setups account for most of this work. Pairs with an outdoor sound system that can handle the splash zone.

Outdoor kitchens. Smaller TVs (43" to 65"), usually mounted under a covered area near the grill and bar. Family use, sports during cooking, and kid entertainment when adults are outside. Common in Greystone and Mountain Brook custom builds.

Pergolas and pavilions. Partial sun installs — the structure shades part of the day but the TV catches direct light at certain hours. Brightness rating has to match the worst-case sun exposure, not the average.

Garages and workshops. Often overlooked but real demand — climate-controlled garages and workshops with TVs for the project, the game, or background entertainment. These can sometimes use indoor TVs if the garage is conditioned and sealed, but covered or detached workshops need outdoor-rated equipment.

What to Expect From the Process

A typical outdoor TV install in Birmingham runs through four steps:

  1. In-home consultation. We come to the property, look at the actual outdoor space, measure sun exposure during the time of day you'll watch, identify the mounting surface, and check the existing outdoor electrical. About an hour. This consultation matters more for outdoor than for indoor installs because the sun exposure question is much more important than people realize.

  2. Recommendation and proposal. Within a few days, you get a written proposal with the TV (brand, model, size, sun rating), the outdoor mount, the cabling, any electrical work needed, and the install in a fixed price.

  3. Install. Most outdoor TV installs run 1 to 2 days onsite. Mounting, cable runs, weatherproofing, audio integration if applicable, and electrical coordination if a new GFCI is needed. Brick or stone walls add complexity; tongue-and-groove ceilings and cedar siding require careful penetration.

  4. Setup and walkthrough. Picture calibration, source connection (streaming devices, cable, satellite), audio integration if applicable, and a quick walkthrough of how everything works.

Most outdoor TV installs go from signed contract to finished install inside 2 to 3 weeks. Storm season can delay outdoor work — we don't install in the rain, and Birmingham gets some weeks where we lose multiple install days.

These numbers cover the TV, the mount, the cabling, the install, and the audio integration where applicable. They don't cover building a new pavilion, running new electrical service, or modifying the patio structure — though we coordinate with your builder, designer, or electrician on all of those.

FAQs About Outdoor TV Installation in Birmingham

Why can't I just put my old indoor TV on my covered porch?

Birmingham humidity will kill it within 12 to 18 months. Indoor TVs aren't sealed against moisture, aren't UV-coated, and aren't built for the temperature swings. The first really humid summer or the first thunderstorm with sideways rain will end the warranty and usually the TV. The cost difference between an outdoor TV and replacing your indoor TV every year and a half makes outdoor the cheaper choice over any timeframe longer than two years.

How long do outdoor TVs last in Birmingham?

A properly installed outdoor TV in Birmingham should last 5 to 8 years before showing any aging. Some last longer with the right care (a cover during pollen season and winter helps). Indoor TVs run outside last 12 to 24 months on average.

Do I need a Full Sun, Partial Sun, or Shaded TV?

Depends on actual sun exposure on the screen at the time you'll watch. Covered porch with no direct sun on the screen — Shaded category. Pergola or partial-coverage area with sun part of the day — Partial Sun. Pool deck or open patio — Full Sun. Wrong category and the picture is unwatchable; right category and it looks great.

Can you wire outdoor speakers to my outdoor TV?

Yes. Outdoor speakers paired with an outdoor TV is the natural complete setup. Either through the TV's HDMI ARC or eARC output to an outdoor-capable amp, or through a discrete outdoor audio system tied into your whole home audio. Covered in detail on our whole home audio installation page.

What about humidity? Birmingham summers are brutal.

Outdoor TVs are sealed against humidity by design. The case is gasketed, the speaker grilles are vented but baffled, and the electronics are conformal-coated. Birmingham summers don't bother them. Indoor TVs put outdoors don't survive even one summer.

Will lightning damage my outdoor TV?

Direct strikes will damage anything. Surge protection on the outdoor outlet (whole-house surge protection at the panel ideally) handles nearby strikes that send a spike down the power line. Most outdoor TV failures from storms are surge events, not direct strikes — and surge protection prevents 95% of those.

Do you sell Samsung, LG, and Sony TVs for outdoor installs?

Samsung Terrace is the only one of those three brands that makes a serious outdoor TV. We sell Samsung Terrace for outdoor installs. For indoor, we sell all three brands — covered on our TV mounting page. For outdoor we also carry SunBriteTV, Furrion Aurora, and Séura, which are outdoor-only specialty brands.

Do I need a special electrical outlet for an outdoor TV?

Yes — a GFCI-protected, weatherproof, in-use rated outdoor outlet is required by code. If your outdoor space doesn't have one in the right location, we coordinate with a licensed electrician to add one. This typically adds $300 to $800 to the project depending on the run distance from the panel.
